About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

A plan...that's what was needed

And we failed miserably at that! Having done the Golden Bay bit yesterday and driven all the way back to Motueka for the night (80k), whilst going through the information leaflets after dinner we realised we missed out on the Wainui falls at a place called Pohara. It was part of Golden Bay so this morning we drove all the way back to see them before turning around, driving back past Motueka again and onto a place called St Arnaud in Nelsons Lakes national park. In total 250k just because we hadn't planned our route!

Pohara home to the little blue penguin

How's this for a bridge 'ole.

Plenty of landslips along the route.
Took us about 40 minutes to reach the falls along a good path, roughly a 4km return trip, although at one point I thought we may have to turn around as our way was blocked by a fallen bush.

These are Ian's photos taken with the phone because I stupidly didn't check to see how much battery life I had left in my Panasonic.

Path blocked! I might just add that to the left of the path was a steep drop obscured by the foliage. It was a matter of scramble over the best one could.
From glorious sunny weather for most of the day the cloud covered the mountains and the drizzle started as we arrived at St Arnaud.

The campsite tonight is fabulous. Another freedom campground called Teetotal (yea right!!) and lovely walks around the small lake and park.

So we are now in the 'planning' stages. Tomorrow we go to Murchison, loads of things to see and do and then onto Westport on the west coast possibly the day after.

Seen on route
