About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Crickey. Nearly went the wrong way.

Friday 20th

Amazing. We were in the heart of Sale, trains running alongside the canal and cars going over the bridge but by the time we went to bed, not a peep was heard. So apart from the rain continuing on and off throughout the night and intermittently waking us up, it turned out to be a very pleasant mooring.

A late start for us and leaving Sale we headed off toward Stretford Marina to do the usual water, loo and rubbish stop. Then we headed off for Worsley. Well that's where we wanted to go but suddenly we came to a parting in the ways. Surely not at Waters Meeting Junction already??? That was when Ian decided to look at our Nicholson's. Oh blast the book confirmed that we should have headed off to the left onto the Leigh Branch. Instead we had continued on and was now on route for Manchester. Where was the finger post!!!Missing that's what!! Anyway, not having gone too far out of our way Ian started the reverse and straight into a blooming great armchair. No time for a sit down FS! Anyway we completed the turn and got ourselves back on track.

Heading the wrong way.

The reverse

And back on track.
Leigh Branch
From the junction it was a 4.5mile run to Worsley. We made exactly one of those 4.5 miles because Trafford Park shopping centre came into view. That alone would not have made us stop but what did it for me was the sighting of the Sea Life centre. Not quite as near as Birmingham's Sea life but close enough and there were good moorings with rings.. So into reverse again and we pulled in. Ian didn't fancy coming with me so I bought the ticket on line and went by myself leaving Ian to give FS a well deserved wash.

Roman Theme at Trafford Park

Another good mooring.
And at Sea Life,
Some sort of sport shoot was going on.

God was certainly having fun when he designed all those weird and wonderful sea creatures! Great photos.
