About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

One can have fun on the water but then again there is also utter stupidity.

Oxford moorings..... all night the noise!!!. What with the trains, the amount of shouting and abusive language coming from some of the revelers and cyclists speeding by ringing their bell was enough to make one nearly pull pins and head back to the peace and quiet of the river. I'd almost forgotten what it was like to dodge those maniac cyclists. It's the age old story of speeding cyclist V public and, overheard by Ian, two lady residential moorers saying the police had to be called after an incident had occurred earlier in the week. So now the section from Isis lock to the main road is regularly being policed and cyclist made to dismount and walk. Bravo to the police but I feel it's C&RT responsibility to control the cyclist, after all the police are stretched to capacity already without having to watch for those unable to read the 'dismount' signs..

Having left Oxford at Isis lock later then normal 'cause the boat got it's first wash in 6 weeks, we noticed how busy the river was. Queuing at locks became the norm and the journey towards Abingdon took about 3 hours. Only did 7 miles but 5 locks had to be negotiated which all took time. Loads of people enjoying themselves on the river especially with the sun beating down, but if most can have fun on the water as in these first three photos then............

...........What do you make of this!

Lost their rope in the water, could easily have gone round the prop and then........

This idiotic move.

After Sandford lock Ian suddenly spied a lovely mooring just right for FS to fit into. Tied nicely to two trees so decided this will do now until Monday.

Loads of Kingfishers seen yesterday as well as today. In fact opposite the mooring a pair regularly visits to feed but the little blighters are elusive prefering to stay behind the foliage. Did just about get this one with it's fish.

Yes there are two here .

And seen on route

Determined to get the tasty morsel.
