About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Grand morning out.

So glad we decided not to move on today. Weather was simply glorious and just right to go explore Wolverley. It's a beautiful village with the River Stour running through it's heart. Along the banks are meadows and fields and first thing I noticed was a river gauge. Nothing unusual about that apart from the fact it was in the field.

One of the more unusual features of the area were the rooms cut into the sandstone cliffs behind some of the houses. In the centre of the village, next to the Queen’s Head Public House car-park,  some caves can still be seen although now mostly used for pub storage.

Treking up the hill we came to St Johns Church. It was claimed as a tradition that there had been a church or chapel on the site since Anglo-Saxon times. The first documented evidence of a church was the mention of a parish priest in the village in the Doomsday book (1086).

Inside we found a list of Wolverley Priests dating back to 1253 and I always found it strange that in olden times the S was replaced by the F

The old style of writing. F instead of S

In the churchyard many of the headstones dated back to the Tudor Era. Unfortunately they were made out of sandstone and many eroded so some of the dates had been obliterated.

Arriving back at FS we gave the roof and side a good wash although not sure why we bothered as rain has been forecast for the weekend. At least we made the effort and as the towpath changes the nearer to Stourport we get it seemed logical. Want the boat to look smart when we arrive in Droitwich fro the festival next week.

So this evening we tried the meal at The Boat. Highly recommend the food and Ian assured me the beer was equally as good. Cant fault the service either with the meals arriving within 10 minutes. Only Wetherspoons can beat that for promptness.

Tomorrow my MRI scan is due on spine and hip so not sure if I will have time to post.

Will leave you with a few pictures from my walk in the woods this afternoon. The rest can be viewed on my Fauna and Flora Blog
