About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Not another breakdown!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE

Well it is according to our itinerary from the Hotel! And it is a Turkey and Tinsel Break after all. Christmas dinner tonight and maybe even a pressie from Santa Clause hinself! How exciting is that!!!

Anyway, first things first our trip today was to sunny Poole. It was a glorious day for an outing what with the sun shining and a very good breakfast inside us. It was a ' do your own thing' and having a half day to explore the place we choose a walk round the harbour, refreshment break in Wetherspoons and a look at the Poole potteries.

Michael Gold just had to get to the pub. He was on his way, honest, and not returning inebriated! ennibrated

By 13.30 we were back on the coach heading to the hotel. At 15.00 coffee and Christmas cake was being served and after the fiasco of the flat tyre yesterday and the lateness of finally getting back to  tea and biscuit, none of us wanted to miss the three o clock deadline. What we hadn't banked on was the coach breaking down........ again! Good grief this was becoming a habit! And in a middle of a junction to boot! The coach just ground to a halt. Peculiar noises was coming from the front and then the horn went off and wouldn't stop. Paul (driver) told us not to panic as this had happened before. All to do with the on-board computer apparently. It throws a wobble every now and then and cuts power to the gearbox thereby rendering the coach useless. "Anyone using a mobile phone?" shouts he. Apparently a certain signal wavelength sends the computer into a tizz and shuts everything down. Paul became the hero this time, or so we thought, 'cause within minutes the engine roared into life. Praising his efforts he then admitted that nothing he did caused it to start. All he does is to wait for the computer to sort itself out and then turn the key.  So we did make it back in time for our tea and Christmas cake after all.

And from the harbour,

Irene,
That bus sounds quite lethal.

What would have happened if you'd been hammering down a motorway in heavy traffic?

Make sure you always have a seat belt on - but it still makes the blood run cold.

Loved the sparrows - they disappeared from here 20 years ago. Real characters.

That very same question was raised by quite a few of us and yes we all keep our seat belts on at all times. Starting to dread what tomorrow might bring. Gulp!!
