About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Clean bill of health for Jade.

It's great news although the vet still thinks she may have had a mini stroke. It's because the symptoms of head shaking, falling over, head tilt and eye wobble (still occasionally happening) made her believe she has a condition called Vestibular Disease.  Ive looked it up on the web and I must say I agree with her. Nothing to be done unless the condition worsens and then a MRI of the brain to rule out tumours is the only other option. All other checks were fine, heart, lungs, ears, teeth etc. As far as her arthritic stifle joints are concerned we are to continue with the Metacam for the foreseeable future. Jade isn't experiencing any of the side effects so we have come away with 2 large bottles of the stuff and a lighter pocket by £154. Soooooo glad we are insured.

Jade does a lot of this. Takes me ages to walk a few yards. Must be her age!

And finally:-  So sorry for this duck.

Jade's results must be a great relief for you. We have just got our Fletcher (Black Lab) over the dastardly affects of an adder bite...

Hi Lesley,
Gosh that must have been a real worry. Did you see the Adder? What symptoms did Fetcher have? I'm very interested in case Jade ever shows signs of a mystery illness. So glad Fletcher is now okay as it sounded like he was really ill. We do worry about our pets don't we but they are soooo worth it.

Hi Irene
Re the Adder bite that Fletcher had.
We saw him jump back from a hedgerow with all the indicators that he had been stung, our assumption. A bit of head shaking and leaping about then continued his walk. On getting in he eat his dinner but later in the evening his face and neck were swollen and the tail was between the legs. Next morning he was whimpering, much more swelling evident, no appetite at all so off to an out of hours Vet.
I had developed petechial haemorrhages (vessels burst beneath the skin) in his mouth, face, throat, chest and abdomen and the vet found the wound on his face.
He was admitted put on the equivalent to diamorphine, saline, steroids, anti biotics and anti histomines .
Stayed in doggie hospital for 36 hours and then released into our care provided he saw a Vet the following day- we were away from the boat visiting relatives at the time of the incident.
He came home with lots of meds and I called ahead on our journey back to Aston Marina and made an appointment for him to be seen by a Vet in Stone. At this stage he is some pain, evident if he jumps into the boat or is touched and his skin below his coat is purple. Next morning his appetite has returned, probably as a result of steroids, he is in less pain and peeing a great deal. The Vet in Stone examines him but will not sign him off and arranges to see him two days later. We take photo's of the extent of the bleeding/bruising which we repeat 24hrs later and it is very evident that things are improving and out of pain. The Vet saw him on the second visit and he is signed off for light duties!
Adder wrestling is a hobby that we would dissuade him to adopt in future.
I heard yesterday that another dog, a n English Bull Terrier, was bitten in the same location the following week but again, big dog, prompt action and expensive Vet bill has saved the day.
Best wishes to Jade, and yourselves of course,
Regards
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
Wow. Poor Fletcher. It's a good job you could get him to a vet. So often we are moored in remote areas where help is nie on impossible. It,s good to know he has made a full recovery and thanks for the information. I'll know what to do if it ever happens to Jade.
Hope to meet up one day, until then.
All the best from us both.

Hi Sue,

It means that we can now go cruising without the worry that Jade was in pain.
After dry dock we are off to the Ashby to await Grandchild no 4. Christine's due date is 13th May so fingers crossed it comes on time.
It must be so annoying about your engine problems. Lets hope it is resolved soon. Hope to see you one day until then,
Love to you both.

I've heard the phrase 'love a duck' but that is well over the top, poor thing... LOL

Glad to know that Jade has a green light from the Vet, what a relief :)

Just got to get your bottom tarted up and you're off for what I hope is a relaxing summer cruise, well once you've become a 'glamourous granny' that is.. LOL

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the compliment although Ian wouldn't agree with the glamorous bit. As for my bottom.......I could do with it tarting up although shrinking would be better. LOL
