About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

For once we could see what was round our prop.

Having traveled up the Erewash and nearly got stuck under the new bridge by Tesco in Ilkeston because of something submerged, I was very concerned that some damage may have  occurred to our new prop. All that banging and clattering had unnerved me at the time although Ian said the chances of the prop being damaged was almost non existent, so today Ian decided to see if my fears were grounded. Thankfully they were not but with the water crystal clear, we could plainly see what had wrapped itself round the propeller. Amongst this lot was also wire. Looked like the sort that is used to keep chain link fencing taught and had wound itself round the shaft making it very difficult for Ian to remove. With loads of brute force and ignorance he managed to pull it off.

Today we also washed and polished both sides of Free Spirit before taking her to our mooring. With us breasted up with working boat Bath (70ft) and us only 57ft the only place we can get off is the stern. No chance then to clean my windows for the foreseeable future so thought best I got it done now!

Getting ready to breast up with Bath. The road is directly above our bow so me thinks we will have to try and get used to all theat traffic noise!

With Bath being so much longer then us the mud weight has had to be deployed again!

And finally:-
